Major Tom Cannon twist as Leicester City rivals hold talks to sign Sunderland and Sheffield United target

Sunderland and Sheffield United both want to sign striker Tom Cannon from Leicester City. He’s now back at the King Power Stadium after his loan spell at Stoke City, but his next move may be elsewhere in the Premier League.

Tom Cannon is again at the centre of a transfer saga. He appears to have been during the last few windows now, but now he finally looks set for a career-changing move. Not like his move to Leicester City in 2023 that hasn’t worked out.

And despite him playing just 13 Championship matches for the Foxes last season, scoring twice, it looks like Leicester could actually make a profit on him. They paid £7.5million for him last summer and it now looks like £13million is the asking price.

The latest is that Sunderland and Sheffield United are ready to pay £13million for Cannon each, with the Foxes now seemingly preferring a sale during this January transfer window, rather than a loan-to-buy deal. On Wednesday, Leicester City officially recalled Cannon from Stoke City.

Everton in talks to re-sign Tom Cannon

In a shock move on Wednesday, it was revealed that Everton want to re-sign Cannon. The 22-year-old Irishman rose through the ranks at Goodison Park but was shipped out to Leicester after making just three Premier League appearances in two seasons for the Toffees.

Everton, who’ve since seen former Sunderland boss David Moyes return to the club, ‘have held talks over making a move for Cannon within the last 24 hours’ per an emerging report from GIVEMSPORT.

But after Cannon’s prolific spell in the Championship in 2024/25, with nine goals in 22 games for the Potters, GIVEMESPORT add that Cannon is ‘more likely to seal a switch back to the Championship’ in January.

Do Everton have any money to spend in January?

It’s been widely known for a while now that finances at Everton are somewhat tight. They’ve overspent in recent years, and spent on very poor signings too, but Moyes will have some money to try and rebuild the squad in January.

David Ornstein for The Athletic says that ‘some money’ has been made available for transfers, though how much exactly remains to be seen. Everton are still working within tight PSR rules, so it’s likely not a huge amount.

Ornstein goes on to tip Everton to sign a couple of players during the window, saying: “Maybe one for the here and now ready to hit the ground running. Maybe one for the future as well.”

Cannon to Everton then could well be a realistic bet. But whether he’d even want to return to the club where he wasn’t given a chance remains to be seen. For Leicester though, it’s about who comes up with the best offer.

Right now who that team will be remains to be seen.
