Sunderland have been linked with a long list of names today, despite the fact they are still waiting to make their first signing.
The Black Cats look extremely close to wrapping up a loan deal for Chris Mepham, with reports this morning claiming he was scheduled for a medical.
His impending arrival comes after news broke that Aji Alese’s ankle injury is worse than first thought.
Sunderland are still competing for two midfielders and are also targeting a number of potential strikers, with the club under increasing pressure to replace Ross Stewart following his 2023 exit.

Sunderland in for one of the ‘busiest ever deadline days’
The Wearside outfit have already missed out on Alexandre Mendy, Tom Cannon and Roko Simic, but it appears the club are far from done ahead of their 11pm deadline.
Journalist Phil Smith wrote on X: “Has the potential to be one of the busiest ever deadline days for #SAFC – Mepham, Aleksic & Samed advanced – At least one striker still on agenda – Ekwah, Hemir & Pembele close to loans – Possible that Triantis, Bennette, Johnson, Anderson etc follow who knows what else!”
Things are looking extremely positive on Wearside
Sunderland fans will know not to get too excited about all these rumoured arrivals, but it certainly has the potential to be one of their most exciting transfer windows in a long time.
Mepham brings expereince, while Salis Abdul Samed looks to be a promising player who has Champions League experience.
Meanwhile, they have been linked with some interesting forwards, with Gift Orban one ambitious move that would be exceptional business if they pulled it off. The 22-year-old was previously linked with Tottenham following Harry Kane’s move to Bayern Munich.
If Sunderland can sign Orban, or just any proven striker, then Kristjaan Speakman will surely get plenty of credit for drastically turning things around after a disastrous 2023/24 campaign.
There are still over seven hours to go and Sunderland fans are in for a long evening, but let’s just hope there are smiles on faces tomorrow morning.
