Sunderland fans have quickly warmed to loan man Wilson Isidor, who’s now scored goals in his last two Championship outings for the Black Cats.

Sunderland have been longing for a prolific no.9 since the 2022/23 season in the Championship. And Kristjaan Speakman has worked hard on finding one.

Last summer, the Speakman’s striker signings didn’t work out. So far this season, though, Wilson Isidor is proving to be a hit.

Sunderland signed Isidor on loan from Zenit during the summer transfer window and Regis Le Bris says that Isidor was initially set to play as a winger for the Black Cats.

But starting the last two Championship games as the no.9, with Eliezer Mayenda currently injured, Isidor has shone, earning huge praise from supporters.

Sunderland have also signed Aaron Connolly on a free transfer. And with Mayenda having shown his scoring touch this season, it finally looks as though the Black Cats’ striker woes are coming to an end.

Phil Smith rates Sunderland chances of signing Wilson Isidor

Sunderland had to pay a loan fee for Isidor. There’s also an option to buy the Frenchman, though how much that fee is remains unclear.

Discussing the chances of a possible permanent deal for Isidor at the Stadium of Light, journalist Phil Smith revealed that the Black Cats wouldn’t have to pay a huge transfer fee.

Speaking on On The Whistle after the 2-0 win against Derby County on Tuesday night, Smith said: “It’s not a hugely expensive deal.

“But, if he keeps playing well, I don’t think there’s any doubt that Sunderland will do it.”

Early days for Wilson Isidor at Sunderland despite impressive form

Sunderland fans know all too well the story of falling in love with a loan player, only to never see him return.

So expect everyone to remain cautious about the possibility of a permanent deal for Isidor, despite his impressive recent run in the side.

Le Bris will simply be focussed on keeping the 24-year-old in scoring form and on keeping Sunderland in 1st place of the Championship table.

But if Isidor keeps on scoring then the conversation over a permanent deal will eventually come up, and with Sunderland having the option to buy, they’re in pole position.

Then with Smith revealing that it’s not an expensive deal, it may be something that Sunderland look into regardless of how many goals Isidor eventually scores this season.

Up next for the Black Cats is a game against Leeds United on Friday night.
