One Sunderland star returned to form in style on Tuesday night in the Black Cats’ 2-0 victory over Derby County.
Sunderland once again regained their top spot in the Championship at the Stadium of Light after they breezed past the Rams.
It was another impressive display from Regis Le Bris’ side as they bounced back from their defeat to Watford on the weekend in style.
However, one star in particular was impressive after he recovered from his shocking performance against the Hornets.
Dan Neil had a stunning game against Derby County

Dan Neil was in the bad books on the weekend after the captain made a terrible lung on a Watford player to concede a late penalty.
While Neil later admitted his penalty mistake was ‘daft’ it ultimately cost the Black Cats a valuable point on the road as they push for promotion.
Going into the game, there was a debate on whether the midfielder should even start against Derby. However, Le Bris stuck with his captain and was no doubt rewarded.
According to Sofascore, Neil was one of Sunderland’s best players on the pitch. The midfielder earned a 7.2 rating and had a wonderful defensive display.
During the game, Neil performed three tackles, won six ground duels, had a 100% dribble success rate and completed 84% of his passes.
This form helped Sunderland keep an all-important clean sheet and establish a new record at the club.
Good to see Dan Neil respond after Watford mistake
For many, after such a poor mistake against Watford on the weekend, it would be easy for players to hide on the pitch. However, Neil did the opposite.
The captain showed why he had the armband on Tuesday night as he reacted perfectly to his poor performance by putting in an excellent shift against a good Derby side.
Sunderland need Neil on good form if they are to get promoted, and thankfully, the captain is now showing signs that he may get back to his best.
Hopefully, after the international break, Neil’s performances become more consistent so the Black Cats can establish some breathing room at the top of the Championship.
