Sunderland have broken a new record after they flew to the top of the Championship thanks to their 2-0 victory over Derby County.

The Black Cats returned to winning ways on Tuesday night as goals from Jobe Bellingham and Wilson Isidor proved to be enough to get three points.

It was another sensational performance from Regis Le Bris’ side who never looked in danger against a strong Derby team.

Romaine Mundle once again had a stunning game which earned him the plaudits. However, the performance of the team now means that Sunderland has broken a long-standing record and created history.

Sunderland’s start to the new campaign has been phenomenal. Despite Opta predicting the Black Cats would be in a relegation battle, the club are at the opposite end of the Championship table.

One big part of their success has been their home form. So far this campaign, Sunderland have won every game at the Stadium of Light, with their victory over Derby breaking another record.

In their four home games, the Black Cats have beaten Sheffield Wednesday 4-0, Burnley 1-0, Middlesbrough 1-0 and now Derby 2-0. All of these have been achieved without conceding a single goal, establishing a new club record.

Sunderland’s defence deserves high praise

Sunderland’s defence so far this season has been excellent. Four consecutive clean sheets at home is no easy feat, yet, the backline seemingly did it with ease.

While an attack is always important in a promotion push, a great defence ensures that you finish in the top two.

As it stands, teams can barely create a good chance against the Black Cats, let alone score a goal.

Hopefully, over the coming months, the backline continue this run of form and keep Sunderland top of the table.
