Sunderland will confirm the signing of Nathan Bishop next week.

That’s according to Alan Nixon, who has reported that the Black Cats are closing in on the Manchester United goalkeeper.

The 23-year-old joined the Red Devils from Southend United in 2020 but is yet to make an appearance in the Premier League, though he did feature in their pre-season defeat to Wrexham on Wednesday.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this week that Manchester United had agreed to sell Bishop to Sunderland, however they were waiting to return from their tour of the United States before he could leave the club.

With the Premier League outfit set to conclude the trip with Monday’s clash against Borussia Dortmund, Sunderland could now welcome the ‘keeper over the next few days.

Nathan Bishop will provide Anthony Patterson with important competition at Sunderland

Anthony Patterson has rarely been challenged for his place in Sunderland’s starting line-up, with Alex Bass only making a single appearance in the Carabao Cup prior to his loan move to AFC Wimbledon.

However, Bishop will be eager to compete with the 23-year-old for his spot in between the sticks and certainly isn’t moving to Wearside to sit on the bench for his long-term future.

Both goalkeepers are the same age and will be eager to progress with the Black Cats this season, with Bishop previously sitting as their fourth choice goalie prior to David De Gea’s exit.

Despite his potential that led to Bruno Fernandes labelling him ‘amazing’, Bishop leaves on a sour note after puncturing Paul Mullin’s lung during the friendly against Wrexham.
