There seems to be a few irons in the fire for Sunderland right now. And with two weeks left in the January transfer market, this winter window could prove to be a decisive one for the Black Cats.
Regis Le Bris’ Sunderland have gotten back to form in recent weeks, winning both their opening Championship games of 2025 whilst also making waves in the January transfer window.
The Black Cats have stunned their promotion rivals with the loan signing of Enzo Le Fee from Roma and now Sunderland are trying to sign Tom Cannon, who’s also wanted by the likes of Burnley and Sheffield United.
Should Cannon join after Le Fee, it would be a hugely positive move for the club, and one that would indicate the Sunderland owners’ emphasis on securing promotion this season. And Cannon isn’t the only one that could be on his way to the Stadium of Light.
Aston Villa’s Louie Barry continues to be linked, along with Chelsea’s Harvey Vale, who’s been linked with several clubs in England and abroad.

Harvey Vale nearing Chelsea exit amid Sunderland links
Earlier in the window, Sunderland were linked with Vale who sees his Chelsea contract expire at the end of the 2024/25 season. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who can also operate on the left, has also had links to the likes of Anderlecht and Heerenveen.
Sunderland AFC News later revealed that Vale is wanted by four other Championship clubs alongside the Black Cats. Meanwhile, Chelsea are ready to sell Vale for £0 during this winter window, but the Blues want to include a sell-on fee and add-ons.
Now, Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill has revealed that Vale is nearing a permanent exit from Stamford Bridge with offers from Championship clubs. Gill though doesn’t suggest where Vale is heading.

Harvey Vale signing could be perfect timing for Sunderland
Sunderland AFC News spoke with Chelsea expert Caleb Sage earlier in the month to get the lowdown on Vale. Sage told us that Vale has been playing as a left-back at Chelsea and for the Black Cats, this signing could now be perfectly timed.
Aji Alese has picked up an injury and will require surgery. He’s set to be sidelined for a couple of months at least, leaving just Dennis Cirkin at left-back.
Le Bris not only needs cover in that position but he also has to remember that Cirkin hasn’t been at his best since his broken wrist, so added competition at left-back in the form of Vale could have multiple benefits for the Black Cats.
