Rumours linking Jack Clarke with a move away have been growing over the past week. New details have emerged suggesting a sell-on clause remains in his contract.

After an excellent start to the season, the Black Cats have seen Clarke’s stock rise quickly. He has seven goals in just 11 games.

Following his top-class performances, he won the Championship Player of the Month award, further boosting his profile.

The English winger has continued on from last season. He registered nine goals and twelve assists in a positive season.

Clarke’s Black Cats move

After an initial loan spell where the former Leeds United youngster scored just one goal, the move was made permanent.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Clarke following an excellent breakout season under Marcelo Bielsa in the Championship.

Despite a deal worth over £12 million being sealed, the winger never made an appearance in North London.

There are very unclear reports of how much Sunderland paid. There are now rumours of a clause inserted in his contract.

According to TEAMtalk, the Lilywhites may have a sell-on clause. This could see them take up to 50% of any fee received.

Rumours are rife

It has been reported today that Crystal Palace and Brighton and Hove Albion have joined the race to sign Clarke in January.

These have added to prior rumours that Burnley and Brentford want to sign the 22-year old. A fee in the region of £15 to £20 million is allegedly enough to test the Black Cats’ resolve.

The issue for Tony Mowbray’s side is that if the reports are true, then they will lose 50% of the transfer fee that comes in.

As a result, Sunderland is likely to demand a bigger transfer fee which may see some teams put off signing him.

This situation is a win-win for the Championship side as they either receive a great fee or keep hold of a great player. Either way, there is a silver lining.
