Sunderland star must avoid Alexandre Mendy mistake after crystal clear transfer wish

One Sunderland player may repeat a similar mistake to Alexandre Mendy, who wanted to sign for the club, but didn’t.

Alexandre Mendy was a hot topic among Sunderland fans during the summer transfer window, following his links to the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland were keen on signing Mendy following his impressive 2023/24 season at Caen. But the move never materialised.

Mendy publicly stated his desire to move to Sunderland, telling Caen that he wanted to leave. Though the French club wouldn’t lower their valuation of the striker.

Since, Mendy has been in fine form for Caen in Ligue 2, having scored four goals in his last four appearances.

He’s slowly making amends with the club after his outbursts during the summer. Meanwhile, Sunderland have a new star striker emerging in Wilson Isidor.

The Frenchman joined on loan from Zenit during the summer transfer window and has now scored two goals in his last two.

Wilson Isidor makes Sunderland transfer wish

Regis Le Bris seemed unsure where to play Isidor this season. Le Bris says that Isidor was meant to play as a winger but he’s since been impressed by his performances as the no.9.

With Eliezer Mayenda injured and new signing Aaron Connolly working towards fitness, there’s a chance for Isidor to really make that position his own.

Speaking to Sunderland Echo, the 24-year-old was asked whether he’d like to make his stay on Wearside permanent, to which he gave a clear answer.

“I am on loan but with an optional buy,” Isidor explained. “But no, for me, I want to continue with Sunderland and write the club into my career and my history.”

Speaking earlier this week, journalist Phil Smith backed Sunderland to sign Isidor permanently, also explaining that the option to buy is not overly-expensive.

Wilson Isidor needs to focus on the football

It’s still very early doors for Isidor. But he’s showing his class, having settled into the team quickly and having become a well-liked player among supporters already.

Sunderland may be able to pay the option to buy with ease, with Smith saying that it’s not too expensive.

And the Black Cats may be keen to do so, even before the season ends. But there’s always inevitable complications in these matters and Isidor would do well to not get his hopes up right away.

As we saw with the Mendy deal, players can be disappointed. And Isidor may well go on a barren run in front of goal now, causing Sunderland to change their mind about him.

A decision on Isidor will no doubt be made when the time is right.
