Sunderland must plot late bid for striker liked by Speakman as transfer race heats up

Sunderland could still finalise a deal for a striker liked by Kristjaan Speakman.

Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman has recently spoken out on the club’s striker search, which appears o be a running theme for the Black Cats now.

For the past two years, Sunderland have lacked an out and out, prolific no.9; at least when Ross Stewart wasn’t available during 2022/23, which was most of that season.

Last summer’s striker signings all flopped and new head coach Regis Le Bris is the latest man hoping that Speakman can bring some goal-scorers to the Stadium of Light.

Speaking on the matter recently, Speakman said: “We’ve got to find the right centre forward who’s available and viable for us. We will try to make sure we get the right one.”

Whilst Speakman’s comments may not fill Le Bris with confidence, there’s still hope that Sunderland could land one of their long-term striker targets this summer, should they still be interested.

In January, Sunderland were heavily linked with Kieffer Moore at Bournemouth but were beaten to the signing by Ipswich Town.

Race to sign former Sunderland target Kieffer Moore heating up

Moore looks poised to leave Bournemouth on a permanent deal this summer, following his impressive spell with Ipswich Town in the second half of last season.

The Welsh international scored seven in 18 Championship games as the Tractor Boys earned promotion to the Premier League.

Now, it’s being reported that Hull City are keen to sign the 31-year-old, with a deal previously thought to be quite far along.

But Sheffield United are attempting a late hijack of that move, with BBC reporter Rob Staton suggesting that the race for Kieffer Moore may still be quite open.

Sunderland and Kristjaan Speakman must finally act on Kieffer Moore situation

It’s clear that Sunderland and Speakman like Moore. And given his situation at Bournemouth and his impressive tally for Ipswich Town, there’s all the more reason for Speakman to bring Moore to Wearside this summer.

The recent signing of Alan Browne shows that Speakman is ready to make changes to the model and bring in players who are slightly older but more experienced in the second tier.

Moore is not only that, but also someone who can score goals in the Championship; a striker with a proven track record in the Championship is hard to come by and something that Sunderland desperately need.

It could be down to Moore who isn’t short of options. But Browne’s move to Sunderland suggests that Speakman has a project to sell to players like Moore who are at a crossroads and looking for a new challenge.

If Sunderland can sign Moore then it would be an excellent capture.
