Sunderland’s director of football Kristjaan Speakman praises Alan Browne, who he ‘closely followed’.
Regis Le Bris has prioritised Championship experience to be brought into his youthful squad with the average age of 23.
Sunderland’s squad is full to the brim with youth excellence, particularly in Jobe Bellingham, who has committed his future to the club.
However, the Black Cats lacked leadership across the team throughout the 2023/24 Championship season, where they finished in a lowly 16th position.
They have since brought in 34-year-old goalkeeper Simon Moore, who will be utilised in a mentoring role for Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson.
Midfielder Alan Browne has also arrived on Wearside, with certified Championship experience, having played for over a decade at Preston North End.
After the signing of the 29-year-old, Kristjaan Speakman confirmed how long he was keeping tabs on the experienced man before his arrival.

Sunderland’s Director of Football, Speakman, confirmed that he has ‘closely followed [Browne] throughout the last eight months’.
He said to the club: “Alan [Browne] is a dynamic and versatile midfielder, who will complement the players within our squad and bring fresh qualities to our midfield.
“His ambition was at the forefront of our discussions.
“He believes he can fulfil those ambitions at Sunderland and after seeing our potential, he wants to play an important role in creating future success.
“We are delighted to welcome him to the club.”
Browne regularly featured in the 2023/24 Championship season with Preston North End, where he played on 41 occasions, often entrusted with the captain’s armband.

Alan Browne will help get the best out of Sunderland’s young squad
When looking at Championship pedigree, a born leader, and a hardworking figure, there’s not many teams that would overlook Browne, especially having been a Championship captain for several years.
The midfielder, alongside the signing of experienced shot-stopper Moore is the exact type of player that Sunderland need to get the best out of their youthful side.
Le Bris has the capabilities to push a young side during training and help them reach the best of their ability, however experience will be needed out on the pitch to ensure that Sunderland don’t yet again let their heads drop too easily and lose direction.
Luke O’Nien is a strong leader in the changing rooms, however needed a lot more help in galvanising the players, who were all shot of confidence.
Browne, after several seasons in the Championship, will be keen to rally up the troops and help spark optimism in the Sunderland squad that were so deflated last season.
