Pundit’s ‘interesting’ Regis Le Bris verdict is a reminder of the bigger picture at Sunderland

Regis Le Bris is enjoying a strong start to life as Sunderland manager.

So far this season, Regis Le Bris has won both of his two Championship games in charge, winning his first game at the Stadium of Light in style.

Sunderland beat Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in front of the Sky Sports cameras, with goals coming from Dennis Cirkin, Luke O’Nien, and then two from Eliezer Mayenda.

It maintains the Black Cats’ perfect start to the 2024/25 season with two wins from two in the Championship, and no goals conceded.

Up next for Le Bris’ side is a home game vs promotion hopefuls Burnley in what’ll be Sunderland’s toughest test so far under their new manager.

But fans will remain hopeful of a result and hopeful of their chances in the Championship promotion race this season; especially if the likes of Jack Clarke stay beyond August 30th.

For Sunderland though, whilst the start to life under Le Bris is exciting, there’s still a definite need for patience, and a management of expectations.

David Prutton verdict on Regis Le Bris at Sunderland

Speaking to Sky Sports, pundit David Prutton recently gave his verdict on Le Bris.

Prutton said in wake of the Sheffield Wednesday game: “For Sheffield Wednesday, food for thought. On the other hand, well done Sunderland.

“Sunderland have shown under Regis Le Bris, that there’s something very interesting there… Obviously Sunderland have gone through that process of getting to what they believe to be the right man, who’s started very well indeed, with a young side… It’s a team that so far, a couple of games in, is doing OK.”

Prutton’s ‘interesting’ verdict on Regis Le Bris reminds us of the Sunderland ‘bigger picture’

Prutton, like many outsiders and neutrals will do, still have reserved opinions on Le Bris, despite his strong start.

And it’s a reminder that it’s still very early doors for Sunderland and Le Bris, and that the bigger picture for the two of them is time together.

This summer, when Sunderland were hiring their next manager, there was a definite sense that the Sunderland owners and Kristjaan Speakman wanted to make arguably their first long-term appointment.

And so far, the project has been put in motion, and if Speakman can sign a new striker soon then Le Bris and Sunderland could be ahead of schedule in their long-term aim of reaching the Premier League.

But, like Prutton says; there’s certainly something ‘interesting’ brewing at Sunderland, though it’s too early to give a definitive verdict.

We saw last weekend with Sheffield Wednesday; many tipping them for strong season after a strong start, only to then get thumped 4-0.

Sunderland need to learn from the Owls’ early optimism, remember the long-term project at the club, and maintain expectations.
