Sunderland rumoured to be closing in on striker deal, but it’s not Alexandre Mendy

Sunderland could yet have a very promising end to the summer transfer window.

For Sunderland, this summer and 2024 as a whole, has been very rocky at times.

The end of last season was tough for the Black Cats who eventually finished in 16th place of the Championship table under Mike Dodds.

Then followed an arduous search process for a new boss which eventually ended in the appointment of Regis Le Bris in June.

And despite what’s so far felt like a challenging summer transfer window at the Stadium of Light, the Black Cats have started very well under Le Bris.

Sunderland thumped Sheffield Wednesday 4-0 in their last outing and have now won both of their opening two games of the 2024/25 season, and without conceding a goal too.

What’s more; it looks like Kristjaan Speakman will finally sign a striker, with Sunderland still working on a deal for Alexandre Mendy, per recent reports.

Now though, there’s another striker apparently close to a move to Wearside this summer.

Sunderland chasing deal for Zenit striker Wilson Isidor

It’s claimed that Sunderland are quite advanced in a deal to sign Zenit striker Wilson Isidor.

The 23-year-old Frenchman began his career with Monaco before moving to Russia with Lokomotiv Moscow in 2022, then joining Zenit on a permanent basis earlier this summer.

Numerous sources have suggested that Sunderland are closing in on a loan deal to sign Isidor, who scored twice in 14 Russian top flight games last season.

Journalist Phil Smith posted on X on Tuesday, revealing that Sunderland are ‘in talks’ over a deal for Isidor, after Zenit’s CEO had apparently claimed Isidor was heading to Sunderland.

Sunderland have found out this summer, in their managerial search in particular, that deals can fall through very quickly, and even when at an advanced stage.

It still seems like Mendy is a key target, but Sunderland have given themselves some insurance with this apparant deal for Isidor.

But if Isidor and Mendy both arrive, then Le Bris’ attacking options all of a sudden look very strong, especially with Eliezer Mayenda now up and running in the Championship too.

So what’s been a very tough summer could yet end very positively for the Black Cats, both on and off the pitch.

Up next for Le Bris’ side is a home game vs Burnley this weekend.
