If Ike Ugbo doesn’t sign for Sunderland, Speakman must bring in one of these 3 strikers

Sunderland remain in desperate need of a new striker this summer.

t the start of the summer, Sunderland sporting director Kristjaan Speakman outlined the need for new striker signing at the club this summer.

But now with just three weeks of the summer transfer window, Sunderland are yet to sign a new striker, with just four new signings through the doors at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland were linked with Alexandre Mendy last month and a deal was reportedly close, with the Caen striker keen on the move.

But that move has since gone somewhat quiet, with Mendy releasing a statement last week, outlining his desire to leave Caen.

More recently, Sunderland have taken an interest in Ike Ugbo who shone on loan at Sheffield Wednesday last summer, with a £2.5million fee mentioned for the Canadian international.

But if that move falls through, Sunderland will need to turn their attentions elsewhere.

Here are three strikers Sunderland could sign if a deal for Ike Ugbo falls through this summer…

Tom Cannon

Leicester City striker Tom Cannon was a transfer target for Sunderland last summer before he made the £8million switch to Leicester from Everton.

Sunderland wanted to sign Cannon on loan from the Toffees and Speakman may well have kept an eye on the Irishman’s situation, following Leicester City’s promotion to the Premier League.

The likes of Sheffield Wednesday have enquired about Cannon. Leicester though are currently weighing up their striker options with a couple of injuries in their attacking department right now.

Aaron Connolly

Another Irishman who could be a good fit for Sunderland this summer is Aaron Connolly.

The 24-year-old former Brighton man is a free agent after being let go by Hull City last summer, despite scoring eight in 24 Championship outings for the Tigers.

Injuries kept Connolly out for large parts. But when available, the striker showcased his natural poaching abilities in the Championship and it’s a surprise that he hasn’t found a new club yet.

Even if as a back-up option alongside Ugbo or Mendy, Connolly could be a good squad-booster for Regis Le Bris this summer.

Tyrese Campbell

Another free agent who Sunderland could snap up right now is Tyrese Campbell.

The 24-year-old was let go by Stoke City at the end of last season and is currently linked with the likes of QPR, West Brom, and Rangers among others.

In 142 Championship outings in his career, Campbell has 31 goals and 16 assists.

Like many of Sunderland’s summer signings so far, Campbell would add yet more, much-needed Championship expertise to a still very young Sunderland side.

He’s also proven his scoring touch in the second tier before, and on a free transfer, Campbell could be a very shrewd signing for Speakman.
