Forget Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg, keeping another star may be the most important thing Sunderland do in January

Sunderland are so focused on bringing in new players this month, that they have to be careful not to take their eye off the ball when it comes to losing their star men.

After the arrival of Enzo Le Fee at the start of January, Sunderland fans were abuzz with excitement at who might follow, with a new striker the priority.

However, with Regis Le Bris’ side flying high in the Championship this season, it’s understandable that there have been enviable glances looking at Wearside’s top talent.

While the likes of Jobe Bellingham and Chris Rigg look like top targets for Premier League clubs, it is now Sunderland captain, Dan Neil, who is attracting attention.

Everton add Dan Neil to their January shopping list

According to a report from The Telegraph, Neil is a top target for Everton as David Moyes looks to help the Toffees steer clear of relegation this season.

It is thought Moyes, who was Sunderland manager when Neil was developing through the club’s academy, is an “admirer” of the 23-year-old, and sees central midfield as a key area Everton need to improve in.

Everton have even sent scouts to watch Neil in the last two games and liked what they saw. However, with Sunderland on track for promotion this season, a deal will not be easy and the Black Cats are expected to resist.

Apparently, a £15m price tag has been put on Neil’s head with a view to deterring any potential suitors.

Sunderland would need a new leader to step up to replace Dan Neil

Dan Neil was praised for his display against Burnley recently, and that’s a common trend for how his season has gone so far.

Indeed, it seems Neil is finally getting the credit he deserves, and losing him would be a hammer blow to not only Sunderland’s promotion hopes, but the club’s immediate future.

Le Bris would not only need to find a new midfielder, he would have to find a new leader, and that is not an easy task at all.

The obvious candidate in the current Sunderland squad would be Anthony Patterson; another academy graduate who understands what it means to represent the club, who is relatively young yet experienced, and from his position, can see and dictate the game around him.
