2024 was a big year for Sunderland, and two players in particular have been celebrated for their impact on the pitch with a major award.
Sunderland are flying high already in 2025, and the Black Cats are on track for promotion after an unlikely title challenge this season.
Regis Le Bris is getting the best out of his young Sunderland squad, and the Frenchman has been great at nurturing more academy talent to continue the impressive production line on Wearside.
Now, two of his best and brightest have scooped an important award to cap an excellent year for the pair.

Jobe and Rigg crowned North East Football Writers’ Young Players of the Year
Both Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham have picked up the North East Football Writers’ Young Player of the Year award, with the Sunderland duo unable to be separated by the voting panel.
As per the club’s official website, the pair will collect their award on March 2 after making waves in 2024 for the Black Cats.
On the honour, Jobe said: “I’m proud to have won this award alongside Riggy, who had an incredible year. It’s a testament to the belief the Club has shown in us and the support we receive from our team-mates and the staff.
“Sharing this recognition with Riggy highlights the Club’s ambition and our focus is now on the final 20 games of the season.”
Rigg shared his thoughts on the award, adding: “The award is even more special because Jobe is unbelievable. It’s amazing to share this award with him and to be recognised for our performances. 2024 was a massive year for me and it is hard to put it into words.
“I owe so much to the players and staff who have supported me throughout my time at the Club. After coming back on Saturday, I can’t wait to play my part in the final run-in.”
Previous winners of the award include current teammates Anthony Patterson and Dan Neil, as well as Jordan Pickford, Jack Colback, and former striker Josh Maja.

How long can Sunderland keep hold of Jobe and Rigg?
The problem for Sunderland is, the better Jobe and Rigg are, the more attention from elsewhere they attract.
While Jobe is not expected to leave the club this month, his future in the summer and beyond remains uncertain, with interest from Premier League sides like Crystal Palace and Arsenal heavily rumoured.
Meanwhile, Rigg himself has played down exit talks, and insists he is happy with his boyhood club. The teenager is arguably more likely to stick around long-term, given his ties to Sunderland, but big clubs will certainly come knocking to test that resolve.
A lot will depend on where Sunderland end up this season. If the Black Cats can get promoted, their chances of keeping their best talent dramatically improves. Miss out on promotion, though, and the lure of Premier League football may be too hard to turn down for Jobe and Rigg.
