Wahbi Khazri is a name that Sunderland fans will remember well, despite him not playing all that many games for the Black Cats.

Wahbi Khazri is another player from Sunderland’s Premier League years, which now feel like an age ago.

But the Black Cats were only relegated from the top flight seven-and-a-half years ago. Now, Sunderland under Regis Le Bris could go on and seal their top flight return, currently sitting in 1st place of the Championship table.

The club goes into this November break on the back of disappointment, though. Sunderland drew 2-2 against Coventry City last time out, despite taking a two-goal lead into half-time.

If the club reaches the Premier League then the Sunderland owners could spend some money, as the previous owners did during their spell in the Premier League.

In January 2016, it was reported that Sunderland paid £8.5million for Khazri.

What is former Sunderland man Wahbi Khazri up to these days?

Khazri is now 33 years old. He spent a year-and-a-half at Sunderland between 2016 and 2018, joining from Bordeaux in a big money move.

In total, 74-cap Tunisian international Khazri made 42 appearances for Sunderland, scoring three goals and assisting two more.

In terms of goals and assists, he proved to be a very disappointing signing. But he was a player with clear ability and he’s proved that in spells after Sunderland.

Khazri joined Rennes on loan following the Black Cats’ relegation from the Premier League in 2017 and then signed for Saint Etienne in 2018.

He scored 11 in 24 for Rennes and then went on to score 37 and assist 24 more in 114 total appearances for Etienne, during what was a four-year spell.

Then in 2022, Khazri joined Montpellier where he’s since scored six and assisted three in 66 total appearances.

This season, Khazri has featured 10 times in Ligue 1 for Montpellier, scoring one and assisting one. He’s out of contract in 2025.

Wahbi Khazri goal for Sunderland vs Chelsea

Khazri helped Sunderland beat the drop in the 2015/16 Premier League season, scoring twice in 14 Premier League outings.

And one Khazri goal may stick out in particular; his wonder volley in a 3-2 win against Chelsea at the Stadium of Light in May 2016.

It’s a goal that helped the Black Cats achieve Premier League safety and one that fans surely remember fondly.
