Sunderland fans were less than impressed with one player after their side’s 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day.

Sunderland almost secured a third-straight comeback win in the Championship on Boxing Day, coming from a goal behind at Blackburn Rovers to lead 2-1 by the 55th minute.

Chris Rigg and Wilson Isidor scored in quick succession after half-time and the Black Cats looked good to go on and seal the win.

But Harry Leonard scored a late equaliser at Ewood Park and Sunderland settled for a 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers.

Regis Le Bris’ side remain in 4th place of the Championship table, now four points behind leaders Leeds United.

Sunderland fans blast Eliezer Mayenda moment in Blackburn Rovers draw

Sunderland had a golden chance to regain the lead at Ewood Park when Eliezer Mayenda was clean through on goal.

But the 19-year-old ran the ball straight into the Rovers goalkeeper and the game ended shortly after.

One Sunderland fan posted: “At the end of the day he’s 19 but we can’t keep playing him just because he’s young,” and another fan added: “Mayenda showing he’s well off a regular starting berth.

“Needs to protect the ball more and like rabbit caught in the headlights at times.”

Similar comments read: “It’s time to say it… Mayenda is not good enough,” as well as: “Mayenda starting to wind me up like. He’s not even kicked the ball there.”

And other Sunderland fans added: “Mayenda is so frustrating, what was he doing there at the end,” with another posting: “Just seen that Mayenda chance you absolutely cannot defend that lad.”

Gary Bennett baffled by Eliezer Mayenda’s missed chance vs Blackburn Rovers

Speaking after the game, BBC pundit Gary Bennett was left baffled by Mayenda’s missed chance against Blackburn, sharing the same thoughts as many Sunderland fans online.

Bennett said: “We had a great opportunity. Mayenda broke clear. All he needed to do, stay composed.

“His strongest side is his left foot. For some unknown reason, the ball’s ran onto his right, and he ends up the goalkeeper smothering the ball.”

Mayenda has scored twice in 15 Championship outings this season. Both his goals came in Sunderland’s 4-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday back in August and he’s not scored since.
