Sunderland star Chris Rigg limped off the pitch during the 2-2 draw against Blackburn Rovers on Boxing Day.

Sunderland went into their Boxing Day game at Ewood Park looking for a third-straight win in the Championship, after back-to-back comeback wins.

Before Christmas, Sunderland came from a goal behind to beat Norwich City. And Regis Le Bris’ side were on course to do the same again at Blackburn.

Going into half-time a goal behind, goals from Chris Rigg and Wilson Isidor in front by the 55th minute of the game.

Blackburn equalised late on and the game ended 2-2. It was a huge blow for the Black Cats who looked very good in the second half, but alarmingly for Le Bris, Chris Rigg was brought off with an injury.

The 17-year-old went down seemingly holding his foot. After a few minutes, Rigg was brought off and helped down the tunnel, heading straight to the changing rooms.

Regis Le Bris quizzed on Chris Rigg injury after Blackburn Rovers

Speaking after the game, Le Bris was quizzed on whether Rigg has sustained a serious injury or not.

The Frenchman said he doesn’t yet know the severity of Rigg’s injury, telling journalist James Copley that the club will get a diagnosis in the next 24 hours.

Copley posted on X:

Rigg scored his fourth Championship goal of the season against Blackburn Rovers and has already played 22 times in the league this season, which is one more appearances than he managed in the entirety of last season.

He joins fellow academy graduate Tommy Watson on the sidelines. Others injured include Niall Huggins, Salis Abdul Samed, Ahmed Abdullahi, Jenson Seelt, Romaine Mundle and Alan Browne.

Chris Rigg’s stance on leaving Sunderland amid Real Madrid interest

It’s no secret that Rigg has interest ahead of the January transfer window, with some of Europe’s biggest clubs having been linked.

This season, Rigg has been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United to name a couple of teams. But the teenager may be staying for the time being.

Before Christmas, it was revealed that Rigg is happy to stay at Sunderland, and if his injury is a serious one then it could completely quash any chance of a January move.

Le Bris though will hope that Rigg is back in action as soon as possible, with the Englishman having become a crucial player in the first half of the season.
