Trey Ogunsuyi continues his impressive scoring streak with the Sunderland U21s. But the youngster has reserved praise for one of his teammates after the draw against Southampton on Friday.

Trey Ogunsuyi is a name that Sunderland fans are very excited about. The 18-year-old Belgian has been in impressive form for the club’s U21s this season with eight goals in as many Premier League 2 games so far.

Earlier in the season, Ogunsuyi was linked with Liverpool before Regis Le Bris handed him his senior debut in Sunderland’s FA Cup defeat against Stoke City in January.

And after scoring a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw against Southampton on Friday, Ogunsuyi may put himself in contention for more first-team minutes in 2025, maybe even a Championship debut in what’s left of the 2024/25 season.

The first-team are back in action on Saturday with a game against strugglers Hull City at the Stadium of Light. It’s a good chance to return to winning ways after defeat at Leeds United last time out.

Whilst Le Bris will be focussed on the promotion push and on his first-team players, he’ll surely have an eye on the U21s, and possibly on 17-year-old Finn Geragusian.

Ogunsuyi stole the show with his hat-trick against Southampton. But the striker reserved praise for another of his teammates; Geragusian, who provided the assists for two of goals against the Saints.

Geragusian, who holds Armenian citizenship, made his debut with the Black Cats’ U18s at the age of just 15, and is now playing regularly with the U21s despite being just 17 years old. An attacking midfielder, he now has six goals and four assists in 11 U18 Premier League games games this season, also boasting one goal and two assists in six games for the U21s.

Speaking to the club after Friday’s draw, Ogunsuyi was asked about playing with Geragusian. He replied: “I’ve enjoyed it. When he’s stepped up he’s been a big help for the team. He’s enjoying the challenge and I’m happy for him.”

Sunderland’s average squad age in 24/25 compared to the rest of the Championship

Last season, Sunderland boasted the youngster average squad age in the Championship, coming in at just over 21 years old. In the summer though, Kristjaan Speakman added some much needed experience to the side and so the average age has gone up slightly.

But the Black Cats still boast the youngest squad in the league with an average age of 23.2 years. Derby County boast the oldest at 27.7 years.

And Sunderland’s squad may maintain an average age around that 23 years mark, as their current first-team players get older and as Le Bris integrates more and more players from the youth academy into the first-team.

Next season, the likes of Ogunsuyi and even Geragusian could be well involved.
