Tony Mowbray explains what has ‘cost’ Sunderland most during three-defeat run

Tony Mowbray has addressed Sunderland’s recent problems after three consecutive defeats.

Speaking in the pre-match press conference, the Sunderland boss claimed that the team’s lack of goals have ‘cost us’ in recent matches.

Following a five-game unbeaten run, the Black Cats form dipped and they have since failed to pick up a point since their win over Watford at the start of the month.

The Championship club have conceded seven goals and scored only once, with zero wins leaving them tenth in the league table ahead of their meeting with Norwich City.

However, Tony Mowbray has insisted his team have still been playing well and has addressed exactly what has been costing them.

“I think the performance levels have been pretty high. I don’t sit here and think we have to do this or have to do that,” Mowbray said.

“We have lost the last two games from defending set-plays which has been pretty good for us for a period of time now but it cost us.

“I think the ability to score more goals have cost us. We had 17 shots at Stoke and 13 the other night.

“Generally I think the identity of the team is still strong and think we are more than capable of winning three or four on the bounce.”

Will Tony Mowbray change things this weekend?

It’s become very apparent that Sunderland are simply relying on Jack Clarke to score the goals this season, leaving us with a massive problem as soon as he isn’t at his best.

After the defeat to Leicester, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Mowbray make some changes this weekend. We have a lack of attacking options, but Mason Burstow really isn’t impressing.

If we can find that spark in attack again then we should be able to get back to winning ways, with the upcoming five matches all very winnable.
