Sunderland’s newest star Chris Rigg has opened up on his footballing idols in a recent interview.
Chris Rigg seems to be the talk of the town at Sunderland right now, and it’s little surprise why.
At just 17 years old, the Hebburn-born midfielder has become one of Sunderland’s most important players under Regis Le Bris this season.
Rigg has scored twice in nine Championship outings this season, scoring a back-heeled goal in the win against Middlesbrough earlier in the season.
Real Madrid are keen on Rigg, per reports. And it’s also claimed that Manchester United are interested in Rigg and could even make a move in the January transfer window.
Rigg is under contract at the Stadium of Light until 2027 after signing his first pro contract during the summer transfer window.
During the summer, Rigg had interest from a number of teams, including Newcastle United.

Sunderland star Chris Rigg idolises England legend Steven Gerrard
Speaking in a recent interview with Mirror, Rigg was discussing his footballing heroes, with England and Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard being one.
Rigg talked about Gerrard’s ability to defend and attack in midfield, which is something we’re seeing in Rigg’s performances this season.
He said: “I said at the start of the season I want to add numbers to my game – goals and assists. I want to be energetic.
“I always studied wingers and little tricky players. I used to watch Neymar, Arjen Robben. I am different now.
“I love Steven Gerrard. He was unbelievable and that is the type I’d try to be. He can stop a goal, and score goals.”

Chris Rigg vs Steven Gerrard at 17 years old
Rigg now has 30 Championship appearances to his name for Sunderland, with four goals on top of that.
He also captained England’s U18s during the international break having previously featured heavily at U17 level.
Gerrard meanwhile didn’t make his first-team debut for Liverpool until shortly after his 18th birthday.
But he did make his England senior debut at the age of just 20, having played four times for the U21s before that.
Whilst two different players, we are seeing some similarities between Rigg and Gerrard; Rigg clearly puts himself about on the pitch and if he can keep scoring more goals, perhaps more ranged goals too, he’ll start to emulate Gerrard even more.
Sunderland are back in action on Sunday afternoon with a trip to Hull City.
