An exciting Sunderland youth player is now attracting interest from a top flight team.
Sunderland are making name for themselves as a club who promotes, develops, and recruits young footballers.
The club’s Academy of Light has produced some top players in recent years, including the likes of Dan Neil, Anthony Patterson, and Chris Rigg, who are all established first-team players at the club now.
Sporting director Kristjaan Speakman also places a lot of focus on bringing in young players from fellow youth academies or first-teams, creating a definite competition among youngsters at the club, with a clear and established path into the first-team.
There’s more names who are starting to turn heads in the Sunderland academy, including the likes of Tom Watson and Matty Young, who’s recently joined Salford City on loan for the 2024/25 season.
Another name starting to catch the eye is left-back Oliver Bainbridge, who’s featured heavily for the club’s youth sides in recent years.

Sunderland gem Oliver Bainbridge has loan interest ahead of 2024/25 season
It’s now reported that Bainbridge, 19, has loan suitors ahead of the start of the 2024/25 campaign.
Alan Nixon has revealed on Patreon that Scottish top flight and Europa League outfit Kilmarnock are keen on a loan deal for Bainbridge this summer.
Nixon adds that other teams are interested too, and that Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes has been impressed with Bainbridge’s performances for Sunderland’s U21s last season.
Last season, Bainbridge featured 20 times in the Premier League 2, scoring one and assisting two.

Why Sunderland must consider Oliver Bainbridge loan exit
Bainbridge is one of several names in the Sunderland academy who have impressed at youth level, and who are now knocking on the door of the first-team.
But, Rigg being an exception, it’s looking like it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the club’s youth players to break into the first-team, given the level of competition among the youngsters.
Watson last season is a prime example; he was shining in the youth sides but barely got a look-in last season, even when Jack Clarke was injured.
So for Bainbridge, a season out on loan instead of another season playing youth football seems best, and playing top flight and European football with Kilmarnock could be hugely beneficial for his development.
He could return next summer and bolster the Sunderland first-team, though the left-back position is pretty well-stocked at the moment.
