Sunderland promotion hopes delivered further crushing blow as OPTA predicts miniscule chance of automatics

Sunderland’s chances of finishing in the top two appear to be dwindling.

In midweek, Sunderland were held to a draw against Preston North End, with Romaine Mundle’s brilliant finish drawing the Black Cats level in the latter stages of the clash.

Sunderland were unable to build on two previous wins notched against both Sheffield Wednesday and Cardiff City, with the Black Cats once again falling short at the Stadium of Light.

Regis Le Bris made it clear that it was a ‘tough game’ for his side, and one that now sees them sit eight points off Sheffield United in 2nd, with nine games left to play of the 2024/25 Championship table.

Following the two points dropped midweek, Sunderland’s chances of promotion have been rated, and it looks rather bleak for Le Bris’ side.

Sunderland handed miniscule promotion chance as OPTA predictions crush Black Cats promotion hopes

With nine games left to play, Sunderland have to make up eight points on the Blades, providing that Burnley don’t sneak into the top two.

Unfortunately, the Black Cats weren’t able to capitalise on both Sheffield United and Burnley dropping points, with both also picking up draws in midweek.

As a result of the recent results, according to OPTA Analyst, the Black Cats has just a 1.06% chance of achieving automatic promotion this season, whilst the likelihood of finishing in the play-offs is 98.92% likely.

In comparison, fellow promotion-chasers Sheffield United and Burnley have a 57.64% and 46.70% likelihood respectively.

Regis Le Bris must focus on gaining momentum ahead of likely play-offs

Whilst there still is the slim potential of Sunderland and Le Bris achieving automatic promotion, all energy must now be placed into galvanising the squad ahead of what will very likely be a playoff battle come the end of the season.

The Championship playoffs can prove to be a lottery on many occasions, but Sunderland must certainly improve their form in the back end of the campaign. Another thing that Le Bris must focus on is getting consistency with his team selection, something that hasn’t been apparent in recent weeks. Without that consistency in the squad selection, it will just make matters more difficult for the Black Cats, who have already proven to be rather inconsistent in regards to performance when Le Bris tinkers with his options.
