Pierre Ekwah suffers resounding defeat with St Etienne

Pierre Ekwah was something of a surprise loan exit from Sunderland this summer, despite there being a strong midfield department under Regis Le Bris right now.

Ekwah joined St Etienne on loan and the Ligue 1 club have the option to make his stay permanent next summer, also paying a seven-figure loan fee for his services.

So far, the former West Ham man has played twice in Ligue 1, with his last appearance being in the 8-0 defeat vs Nice last week.

Luis Hemir proving goal-shy at Juventus

Another surprising move during the summer was Luis Hemir to Juventus.

The Portuguese forward proved to be a huge flop at Sunderland last season, failing to score in 23 Championship outings.

Many expected him to go out on loan this summer, but few thought Hemir would seal a loan move to Juventus, where he’s linking up with their U23s, or ‘next gen’ team.

But so far in four games for his temporary club, he’s yet to score.

Timothee Pembele struggling for game time at Le Havre

Timothee Pembele wasn’t too happy at Sunderland last season, in what was his first season on Wearside after joining from PSG.

After completing his deadline day loan move to Le Havre in Ligue 1, Pembele hit out at Sunderland and the management of last season.

Since his exit from the Stadium of Light though, Pembele is yet to get off the bench for Le Havre, having yet to play a single minute of first-team football.

Nectarios Triantis makes steady start with Hibernian

One player who Sunderland fans still have high hopes for is Nectarios Triantis, who’s headed back to Hibernian on loan.

He spent time on loan with the Scottish club last season but received mixed reviews. Though he’s since made a steady start upon his return, completing 90 minutes in two SPL games.

The 21-year-old has played both games as a defensive midfielder.

Jay Matete and Nathan Bishop spending time in League One

Sunderland also loaned two players to League One in goalkeeper Nathan Bishop and midfielder Jay Matete.

It’s a third loan exit for Matete who’s since played in all six of Bolton’s opening League One games, though the Trotters have started poorly, currently sitting in 19th.

Bishop meanwhile joined Wycombe Wanderers on loan. He featured in the opening two league games before suffering an injury which required surgery.
