Sunderland fans are in awe of one player after a hard-fought win at Luton Town on Wednesday night.

Sunderland put in a fine 90-minute display against Luton Town on Wednesday night, with second half goals from Chris Rigg and Romaine Mundle getting the job done.

With Burnley drawing against Hull City, it leaves Regis Le Bris’ side now three points clear at the top of the Championship table after 11 games.

Whilst there’s praise due for everyone that played at Kenilworth Road, there’s special praise for Chris Mepham on social media.

Sunderland fans in awe of Chris Mepham after Luton Town display

Bournemouth loan man Mepham has earned praise with Sunderland so far, having stepped into the XI due to the injury to Dan Ballard.

The Wales international has now featured seven times in the Championship this season and has impressed in all seven of his outings.

He was particularly sturdy against a very physical Luton Town side who pumped a lot of balls into the Sunderland box.

Sunderland fans on social media hailed 26-year-old Mepham as ‘outstanding’ and ‘quality’, describing him as a ‘brick wall’.

One Sunderland fan posted: “What a difference Mepham makes absolute Rolls Royce of a player at this level.”

Another added: “Chris Mepham might be the best footballer I’ve ever seen.”

And one Sunderland fan humorously posted: “Virgil Van Dijk wears Chris Mepham pyjamas.”

In a recent report, journalist Michael Graham was coy on Sunderland’s chances of signing Mepham permanently from Bournemouth.
