Sunderland fans can’t work out which avenue would be best for Regis Le Bris to go down in reference to one issue.

The Black Cats are gearing up for welcoming Bristol City to the Stadium of Light, where they will hope to build on their well-needed victory last weekend against Stoke City.

Regis Le Bris’ side were massively on top of the opposition, but it looked to be potentially petering out towards yet another draw for Sunderland, however 18-year-old winger Tommy Watson came to the rescue with a second goal of the game to send the Black Cats away with a win.

The Sunderland winger has offered a necessary threat on the left in his previous two outings, and there is no doubt that Le Bris will see him as a crucial member of the first-team following the win.

However, once New Year swings around, there will be a difficult decision to be made by Le Bris with the returning Romaine Mundle, and even Sunderland fans can’t quite work out what is the best option to go for.

Sunderland fans in disagreement over Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson debate

Watson’s stellar performance at the weekend has really propelled him up the pecking order of attackers at Sunderland, however there will be a difficult decision awaiting Le Bris on whether he will be above the injured Mundle once he returns from his absence.

On X, Sunderland fans have been mulling over the debate, with some suggesting that ‘if Watson is still firing then you needn’t rush Mundle back in,’ whilst another believed that ‘Watson is bang in form but I’d still play Mundle & Watson interchangeably on the left, esp. since Mundle offers more dynamics + experience.’

More fans decided to go down the route of utilising Mundle when he returns, with one suggesting that he is ‘much more effective on the left imo. It’s harsh, but it would have to be Watson [dropped]’. This view was backed up by yet another, who said: “Mundle is the better LW he’s got to start over Watson I think and leave Watson as fresh legs for 70th min. If Patrick Roberts isn’t firing then I’d try Watson on the right.”

Regis Le Bris will be glad he has selection headache impending

When it comes to squad depth across the pitch, Sunderland aren’t exactly brimming with extra quality on the bench and in the rest of the squad, despite the top levels of the starting 11.

Le Bris will without a doubt welcome the increased squad depth he now has in attack, and it will give him more options in regards to experimenting with his current side, something that he hasn’t been fortunate enough to do so far this season with the list of injuries and suspensions he has had to put up with.
