It’s no surprise Tommy Watson is in dreamland after his brace against Stoke City, but the Sunderland starlet admitted he only felt excitement about one of his goals.
Sunderland finally put a stop to the rot with the win against Stoke ending a run of six games without a victory.
Regis Le Bris’ side did not have it easy at the Stadium of Light, though, and had to fight back from a goal down to secure all three points in the final moments of the game.
It goes without saying that the Sunderland fans were delighted with Tommy Watson after his role in the win, and the youngster has now described his own feelings after his star performance.

Tommy Watson’s second goal was everything he imagined
Speaking to the press (via the Sunderland Twitter/X account) after the game, Tommy Watson explained how it felt to score his first and second goal for his boyhood club, and said only one of them fit the vision he has always had in his mind about the special moment.
“It doesn’t get better than that. It was a perfect day, it’s what I’ve worked for all these years, me and my family,” Watson said. “My dreams have come true today.”
Describing his goals, Watson added: “[For the winner] I made a run from quite deep, put my laces through it and it’s gone in the bottom corner… the first goal was more of a shock, the stadium was shocked. The second was exactly what I’ve envisaged in my mind, though.”
It makes sense, to be fair. That first goal was perhaps not quite as special, as it was to level the scores, while his second was the match-winning goal. And, given how quickly that first one came after Stoke’s opener, nobody, not even Watson himself, were really prepared for the moment.

Tommy Watson is one of the most exciting players in the Championship right now
Tommy Watson admitted he has had to be patient for his chance with Sunderland, but it has all been worth the wait, clearly.
He was absolutely electric against Stoke, and you could feel the buzz around the stadium every time he got the ball. In truth, he’s exactly the kind of player fans dream about watching.
Watson is still so young and raw, and has a lot of room to grow and develop as a player, but he’s in the right place for that right now.
Regis Le Bris insisted he will prioritise the development of young players at Sunderland rather than exploring the transfer market, and Watson can be one of the main beneficiaries of that approach this season.
