Sunderland have been trying to secure the futures of two promising talents in recent times. One has just signed a new deal while talks are ‘ongoing’ with the other.

The Black Cats are enjoying an excellent 2024-25 campaign, despite five consecutive draws, as they sit in third place in the Championship.

Regis Le Bris’ side have their sights set on achieving promotion to the Premier League and it looks like they have a realistic chance.

But while the Frenchman takes each game as it comes, the club’s hierarchy must continue to build for the future.

That’s why they have held contract talks with two exciting prospects, one of which has penned a long-term extension.

Sunderland agree new Matty Young contract

Sunderland announced today that goalkeeper Matty Young has signed a new contract which runs until the end of the 2027-28 season.

Young has represented England at under-18 and under-19 levels and is reportedly highly rated within the Black Cats’ setup.

The 18-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at National League North club Darlington and impressed so much that some thought he would make Le Bris’ first-team squad for 2024/25.

Sunderland decided to loan Young to Salford instead but the move has not worked out so far.

Indeed, Young probably needs to leave the Ammies in January as he has only made five appearances in all competitions.

Still, the Black Cats have obviously seen enough to believe he will have a bright future at the Stadium of Light.

Harrison Jones contract talks ‘ongoing’

Sunderland have got Young’s contract extension over the line but they are still working on the future of Harrison Jones.

Jones has impressed in the Premier League 2 this season, with three assists in six games, and made his senior debut in the EFL Cup in August.

The attacking midfielder is one of the most exciting prospects in Sunderland’s academy so it comes as no surprise to see him offered a new deal.

Blacks Cats fans will be pleased to read that the club are ‘hopeful an agreement will be reached by Christmas’, according to the Sunderland Echo.
