Sunderland and Kristjaan Speakman may now face a fresh hurdle in their bid to sign a key summer transfer target.
Sunderland remain in desperate need of a new striker or two this summer, after last season’s struggles in the Championship.
Winger Jack Clarke was the Black Cats’ highest-scorer as Sunderland finished in 16th place of the table under previous interim boss Mike Dodds.
Regis Le Bris has since taken charge at the Stadium of Light and he has three new signings to work with, after Sunderland signed Ian Poveda last week.
A new striker remains the priority though; Kristjaan Speakman appears to be working on a deal for a new striker with reports of a £2.5million Sunderland bid emerging last week.
It was thought that said bid was not for Alexandre Mendy, though; Caen striker Mendy is a key target for the Black Cats right now.
Sunderland are trying hard to sign Mendy following his 22-goal haul in Ligue 2 last season, but appear to face a new hurdle.

Sunderland facing fresh hurdle in Alexandre Mendy transfer race
The story surrounding Mendy to Sunderland could quickly become a saga.
Earlier this month, it was reported that Mendy was undergoing a Sunderland medical, before that was quickly played down.
Now, Caen have received fresh investment from French football star Kylian Mbappe who has become a majority shareholder with the club.
Commenting on the matter, journalist James Copley believes that this latest news greatly impact on Caen to Sunderland; either freeing him up to leave the club or potentially enticing him to stay.
Will latest Kylian Mbappe Caen update impact Alexandre Mendy to Sunderland
This latest news will have certainly caught the attention of Sunderland, who would surely have hoped to have concluded a deal for Mendy by now.
The start of the new season is just around the corner and Le Bris and Speakman would’ve wanted Mendy in by now; bedding into the new style before the new season gets underway.
And like Copley says, this latest update could work one of two ways for Sunderland; it’s certainly exciting news for Caen and possibly for Mendy, who could view this fresh investment as a real positive.
On the other hand, Caen may not need to hold out for as much money for Mendy, given this fresh investment, and that could speed up a possible deal to Sunderland.
It’s certainly a potential spanner in the works for Speakman and Sunderland, and only time will tell if it impacts a deal for Mendy.
