Sunderland have lodged a £2.5million bid for a new striker, but it’s not Alexandre Mendy.
Sunderland and sporting director Kristjaan Speakman are trying to sign a new striker or two this summer.
The Black Cats have a few names linked, with Sunderland eyeing a deal for Alexandre Mendy at Caen following his 22-goal campaign in Ligue 2 last season.
There’s been recent reports that Mendy was undergoing a Sunderland medical earlier this week, though that report was quickly played down, along with the fact that Mendy was in Sunderland to see through his transfer.
Since, journalist Michael Graham has revealed that Sunderland are keen on a striker who played in the Championship last season, though who it is remains to be seen.
It comes after another season where Sunderland lacked an out and out scorer in the Championship, with wide-man Jack Clarke the club’s top scorer with 15 goals in the league.
But amid uncertainty over the move for Mendy, it’s now been revealed that Sunderland have lodged another striker bid.

Sunderland lodge £2.5million striker bid
Graham has now revealed that Sunderland have lodged another bid for a striker, and that it’s not Mendy.
Graham says that Sunderland made a £2.5million bid for a different striker ‘earlier this month’.
Who the striker is remains to be seen, and whether it’s the unnamed striker who played in the Championship last season also remains to be seen.
But it appears as though Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is willing to spend money on the right striker this summer.
The transfer dilemma that Kristjaan Speakman faces at Sunderland
There’s no doubting that Sunderland are in desperate need of a new striker.
They have been for more than a year at least and now, Speakman simply must bring in a new no.9, and hope that he can provide the goals for new head coach Regis Le Bris.
But there’s other areas on the pitch that need bolstering, such as central midfield, and then in goal if Anthony Patterson leaves, with another centre-back perhaps a different priority for Speakman.
And if Speakman goes all out and spends his budget on a new striker, that could then open up other problem areas on the pitch if he can’t go out and spend on a midfielder, or a defender, or a goalkeeper for example.
So there’s big things for Speakman to weigh up at Sunderland this summer. But signing a striker is a must.
