Tommy Watson may be the talk of the town in Sunderland right now after his heroics at the weekend, but the youngster’s night ended in misery against Bristol City on Tuesday night.

Sunderland’s impressive academy has produced another wonderkid, it seems, with Tommy Watson celebrating his first two goals for the club against Stoke City on Saturday afternoon.

Watson said his ‘dreams have come true’ after making the breakthrough at the weekend, and it was hoped he could have a big impact against Bristol City in midweek, too.

However, Regis Le Bris was forced to make a change after just 27 minutes with Watson hurt in a crunching challenge in the box and Patrick Roberts coming on to replace the teenager.

Regis Le Bris is not sure how serious Tommy Watson’s injury is

In his post-match press conference (via Sunderland’s official Twitter/X account), Le Bris was asked whether he could shed any light on Tommy Watson’s condition, and sadly, it was a fairly inconclusive answer from the Sunderland manager.

Le Bris said: “I don’t know the exact diagnosis so far. I hope it won’t be too serious, but it was a pain in his ankle and knee, so I don’t know at the minute.”

After the game, fan favourite Danny Collins offered his hopes and theories on Watson’s injury, saying: “Best we’re hoping for is an impact injury… three or four days before the next game… hopefully it’s not a ligament injury and he can be involved at the weekend.”

Eliezer Mayenda proved he can be a worthy replacement

Hopefully, Tommy Watson is not out for too long, as he has been a real joy to watch for Sunderland of late and it would be a real shame if his momentum is disrupted.

However, Le Bris can rest fairly easy knowing he has a replacement ready to go in Eliezer Mayenda, who put in an exciting display against Bristol City on the night.

Mayenda has been knocking on the door for a while now, and though he might not be quite as impactful as Watson, his hard work, intelligent play, and ability to beat his man will come in handy down the left.

Indeed, Mayenda was one of the stars of the show in our Sunderland player ratings from the game vs Bristol City, and he will be keen to carry that momentum forward now in light of the concerns over Watson.
