The Sunderland boss hasn’t taken long to win over the favour of his squad.
Regis Le Bris’ start as Sunderland manager has been massively successful by all accounts, from the shrewd, yet not excessive transfer dealings to build up his squad for the 2024/25 Championship season, to the incredible start to the campaign that has left them top of the league.
The difference between Sunderland half a year ago and now is astronomical, as the Black Cats lacked any real sense of purpose and identity under the likes of Michael Beale and Mike Dodds.
However, the side has completely changed for the better under the former Lorient boss, and this is something that has certainly been recognised amongst the ranks at Sunderland.
There is no doubt that the Black Cats players are buying into Le Bris’ philosophy, and that has certainly reflected on the performances of the squad.

Sunderland players recognise the changes Regis Le Bris has implemented that have created ‘belief’
The current Sunderland squad looks very similar to the one that finished in a lowly 16th place in the 2023/24 squad, however it has managed to completely turn around its fortunes on the pitch.
Speaking about Le Bris in a Q&A, per Sunderland Echo, Phil Smith said: “I think the players really enjoy the aggressive approach he’s implemented – all of those I’ve spoken to have said he’s got a really positive tactical approach and you can see that they are buying into it on the pitch.
“He’s pragmatic, so they’re not reckless when they press and I think the players can feel it’s working. That belief is so important.
“He’s also got a really calm temperament, which definitely helps managing such a big club where emotions can run high.
“It’s early days but the signs are very encouraging and first and foremost it’s about the organisation and structure he’s very quickly been able to put into place. At the moment, everything is flowing from there.”

Regis Le Bris has already overcome the biggest Sunderland challenge
It was always going to be a challenge for Le Bris to get the best out of a squad that appeared to be so deflated throughout the 2023/24 campaign, especially in the latter half of the season under both Beale and Dodds, where the squad weren’t playing for anything.
Sunderland lacked direction and that was evident based on the performances of large groups of players on the pitch, and that was something that was always going to be difficult for any manager coming into the frame.
The odds were against Le Bris to succeed at Sunderland, with him coming into quite a hostile environment, however he has proven many wrong by being able to get a tune out of a similar-looking side to last season.
If Le Bris is able to continue his side’s form this season after the international break, it would be a remarkable fate from the French boss, and one that certainly deserves credit.
