‘Petrified’… Alan Shearer tells hilarious story of train journey with Sunderland fans after Portsmouth

Sunderland fans had a long journey home after their 3-1 win over Portsmouth at the weekend.

The Black Cats made one of the longest journeys in the EFL on Saturday as they travelled to Fratton Park.

Supporters will have been desperate for the team to make it worth it after their flawless start to the season and they did exactly that.

Sunderland were then challenged with the long and tedious train journey back up north, though it was made much more enjoyable by the three points in the bag and their place at the top of the Championship.

However, while Sunderland fans made use of the long journey to sing and celebrate the victory, it appears that one unwanted visitor had kept his presence on the down low on Saturday night’s LNER train.

Alan Shearer had returned to London following a friend’s wedding in Italy and with only one train remaining to get him back to Newcastle, he was forced on in the knowledge that he was about to be joined by a carriage full of Sunderland fans.

Shearer gets stuck with Sunderland fans after Portsmouth win

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former Newcastle United striker has now told the hilarious story of his four hour journey with his rivals.

He said: So I’ve got my cap on and I’m wedged in the corner of Coach C and on they come. The whole of the isle is taken up by Sunderland fans singing.

“Within half an hour, I can’t even lift my head up, I’m scared to lift my head up because they’re all in a great mood because their team’s won. Then they start singing the Newcastle songs and then they start singing the Shearer songs.

“I had nearly four hours, my neck is killing me today because I couldn’t lift my neck up. I had my head down for nearly four hours. I was this petrified!

“I got all the way to Newcastle, I was petrified getting off at the station. But there was not one person that recognised me. I didn’t move at all for four hours and I didn’t get spotted once. They just sang and abused me for nearly for hours and they didn’t even know i was on the train.

“My friend said to me – why don’t you go walk through the middle of them and ask if they want a drink? So my Saturday was sat on a train for four hours. It was an absolute nightmare.

“So for all you Sunderland fans travelling back on coach C – f*ck you!”

Sunderland fans have been in their own bubble of celebration

While it would have all been a bit of light-hearted banter from Sunderland, there is no surprise that Shearer wouldn’t have wanted to be spotted travelling all the way to the other end of the country.

The Black Cats won’t have been paying attention to much else other than their celebrations though, and Shearer’s presence wouldn’t have made much difference to that.

It’s not very often that the Wearsiders have something to cheer about every single week, and if the players keep putting on these performances then they certainly won’t mind spending hours and hours on trains.

Sunderland have an even longer trip to Plymouth Argyle next week and there is no doubt that Shearer will be making sure he is far away as possible for that evening.
