Tony Mowbray has lifted the lid on his future in management following an extended period away from football.

Sunderland’s 3-2 win against Swansea City has put them 3rd in the Championship table, and it was a performance that truly embodied the spirit and quality the side has put on display on several occasions this season.

The Black Cats showed immense levels of character to come back from a two-goal deficit, with Dan Neil’s captain’s performance making a significant difference after he bagged an impeccable goal, whilst Jobe Bellingham also got on the scoresheet just two minutes after the team captain.

It is clear that following the win, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has got a real feel good factor around the squad, something that has been non-existent since the departure of Tony Mowbray during the 2023/24 Championship season.

After Mowbray’s departure from Sunderland, he went on to take control at Birmingham City for a short period of time before taking a step back due to health issues.

The former Black Cats boss has now made his call on his next move in his career.

Former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray set to return to coaching

61-year-old Mowbray has managed nine separate clubs during his 22 year managerial career, and it looks like he is looking to notch yet another side on that list.

Per Alan Nixon on Patreon, Mowbray is reportedly looking for a return to management following an improvement in his health, with him looking out for a full time offer.

Mowbray’s extended absence has seen him away from management since the 21st May 2024 following his resignation from Birmingham City, where he took control of just eight games.

Tony Mowbray created the foundations for the current Sunderland side

Whilst Le Bris certainly deserves unwavering praise for the work he has done behind the scenes to turn around this group of players that looked so despondent and broken following the lacklustre 16th place finish in the 2023/24 Championship season, much of it comes down to the foundations laid by Mowbray before his wrongful dismissal.

The former Sunderland boss was so close to pulling off a remarkable feat of taking the Black Cats up at the first time of asking after reaching the play-offs in the 2022/23 Championship season, however they were seen off by Luton Town.

Whilst Mowbray just notched a season and a half in charge on Wearside, he will still go down as one of the better managers that Sunderland have had, and there is no doubting that his influence is still on the players.
