A journalist has now issued an update on the injury to Sunderland star Dennis Cirkin.

The 21-year-old was absent from the 3-1 win over Birmingham City on Saturday afternoon.

Jobe Bellingham gave the Black Cats the lead against his former club, before Ryo Miyoshi scored at the half hour mark to make it 1-1 going into half-time.

An own goal from Blues’ centre-back Dion Sanderson in the 57th minute gave Sunderland the lead once again, before substitute Adil Aouchiche scored the third and final goal to seal all three points at the Stadium of Light.

After coming off of the bench in the past three games for Sunderland, Cirkin was absent from the match day squad.

Journalist for the Sunderland Echo, Phil Smith, posted on his X account (formerly known as Twitter) an update on the left-back from manager Tony Mowbray.

“Mowbray confirms it’s Cirkin’s hamstring again.

“Felt it in training yday but felt fine this morning. Then felt it again in the warm up – will go for a scan tomorrow.

“(Mowbray said) ‘It’s frustrating, but it’s great for Nectar (Triantis) who is an amazing young man’.

Losing 21-year-old a blow for Sunderland

This will be a blow to Sunderland and Cirkin.

Cirkin had started this season well, starting the first five games of the season in the Championship for the Black Cats, playing the full 90 minutes in four of those.

He then suffered a hamstring injury at the beginning of September, which ruled him out until late October.

He then returned to the side, and as aforementioned came off the bench in the last three matches.

So just as he has started to make a regular return to the team, it appears he may have picked up the same injury that ruled him out less than two months ago.

Mowbray will hope he is not out for too long, as he already has limited defenders available to him after injuries to Ajibola Alese and Timothee Pembele.
