One Sunderland star spoke fondly about former boss Tony Mowbray following the win vs West Brom.

Sunderland beat West Brom 1-0 at The Hawthorns on Saturday afternoon, as Regis Le Bris’ side notched a second successive league victory.

Trai Hume was the goalscorer for the Black Cats, whilst Dan Neil shone in Sunderland’s midfield.

Unfortunately, Sunderland winger Romaine Mundle picked up a hamstring injury that could see him out for some time, but luckily, Le Bris’ side were bolstered by the return of Enzo Le Fee to the squad.

Of course, this win meant much more to the Black Cats squad, having faced off against former Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray, who one player has spoken highly of after the win.

Sunderland star Anthony Patterson comments on seeing Tony Mowbray ‘on the touchline’

Mowbray’s tenure on Wearside was rather short-lived, despite giving Black Cats fans a memorable 2022/23 season that saw them reach the Championship play-offs, a remarkable overachievement for a newly-promoted side.

The former Sunderland boss was let go in favour of Michael Beale, a decision that certainly backfired in the 2023/24 campaign.

Mowbray, since his dismissal at Sunderland, then received a diagnosis for bowel cancer, but has now managed to step back into management with The Baggies, who he has led to 8th in the table.

It is safe to say that the Sunderland players still have love for the former gaffer, including Anthony Patterson, who, per Sunderland Echo, said: “It was really nice to see him back out on the touchline and what a great guy he is. Really happy.”

Tony Mowbray will always be remembered for Wearside tenure

Sunderland find themselves with a consolidated play-off spot this season, and whilst much of this will come down to Le Bris’ brilliant of rejuvenating the squad that struggled through 2023/24, Mowbray certainly deserves his praise.

The current West Brom boss truly got the ball rolling in the Championship, calming the tide following Alex Neil’s departure, and then proceeded to get his side up to 6th, a true reflection of his impact at the club.

Ultimately, no matter the feat of Le Bris’ side this season, Mowbray will always have a place back in Wearside for how he was able to connect with the fanbase, and deliver a thoroughly memorable campaign.
