Sunderland picked up a monumental three points on Saturday lunchtime, beating West Brom 1-0 at The Hawthorns.

Sunderland got one over former manager Tony Mowbray on Saturday, beating his West Brom side 1-0 in what was a brilliant smash and grab performance from Regis Le Bris’ side.

Trai Hume continued his unlikely scoring form with a brilliant free-kick in the first half. He stood out on the day along with the likes of Chris Mepham and Luke O’Nien at the back.

But Sunderland fans were particularly impressed with midfielder Dan Neil, who fans have been critical of in recent weeks.

Dan Neil back to his best as Sunderland beat West Brom

It’s not been an easy season for Neil. He had to adjust to the new system under Le Bris, doing so as the club’s new captain too. He’s had spells of brilliance and then spells of poor form. Against the Baggies though, Neil was electric.

“Dan Neil superb as always,” wrote one fan after the win at West Brom. “Dan Neil been outstanding today,” said another.

One even wrote: “Dan Neil Man of the Match for me, outstanding.” Meanwhile, this Black Cats supporter posted: “Dan Neil superb.”

This fan added: “Dan Neil again by the way, just a stupidly good footballer. Enjoy him while he’s here,” amid recent reports which state Neil is a transfer target for Roma ahead of the summer.

Roma not the only team looking at Sunderland star Dan Neil

After performances like his one against West Brom, Sunderland fans will be worried of losing Neil in the summer, especially given his contract situation.

Sunderland have held contract talks with Neil but nothing will happen until the end of the season when Sunderland discover what division they’ll be in.

And it gives the likes of Roma and also West Ham a chance to possibly get ahead in the race for Neil, with recent reports revealing that West Ham are tracking Neil along with a few other Black Cats stars.

Right now though, the 23-year-old will be fully focussed on the promotion charge with his boyhood team, who next play Norwich City on Tuesday night.
