One former Sunderland manager was spot on about a former loanee who is tearing up the Premier League despite notching zero goals on Wearside.
There have been several players in recent years who have spent time at Sunderland and then gone on to a brilliant career.
Notably, Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford came through the Academy of Light, to then become integral in the most successful England team in recent history in regards to distance gone in major competitions, whilst the likes of Jack Clarke and Amad Diallo have had spells at the club before being utilised elsewhere at Premier League level.
All four of these players had one thing in common about their time on Wearside, and that was the levels of ability shown throughout their spell, no matter how short or long, especially with Diallo, who has unsurprisingly gone on to become a key player for Man United.
However, there is one player who is currently thriving in the Premier League who did anything but shine during his short spell at Sunderland, and despite his poor form previously on Wearside, he was always destined for good things after what former boss Phil Parkinson said about him.

Former Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson’s words ring true about Antoine Semenyo
Bournemouth attacker Antoine Semenyo is currently thriving at Premier League level, having notched seven goals to propel his side to 5th in the table. Whilst his form has been regarded as brilliant, from a Sunderland fan perspective, it will be seen as entirely unexpected after his short stint on Wearside.
Semenyo managed seven appearances in the 2019/20 League One campaign, often being utilised from off-the-bench for Parkinson’s side.
Despite showing very little quality, albeit at a young age, and lacking an eye for goal, it didn’t stop Parkinson from praising Semenyo at the time, as, per Bristol Live, he said back in February 2020: “What I like about Ant is that he has picked up the things we have worked with him on out there on the training pitch.
“He’s picked up what he needs to do to play in that system.
“We do our homework on people’s character, football intelligence, etc, but you never quite know until you work with them day-to-day.
“And Ant has been great to work with, he is making the runs we want him to make and getting into the areas where he can be dangerous.”

Antoine Semenyo rise could give Kristjaan Speakman optimism to not pull the plug on underwhelming youngsters
At the start of the 2023/24 Championship campaign, Sunderland Director of Football Kristjaan Speakman made several signings of young and inexperienced players, many of which were thrown into first-team football.
To work out how well the majority of the youngsters performed in the team under Michael Beale, and Mike Dodds temporarily at the end of the campaign, you just have to glance at the league table, and that could be one of the reasons why Regis Le Bris didn’t repeat that mistake to such an extent.
Nevertheless, the situation with Semenyo has seen him develop brilliantly, despite not always showing those signs of promise regularly during his spell at Sunderland, which could give Speakman confidence that the likes of Luis Hemir, Jewison Bennette, and Abdoullah Ba could still turn a corner in their Black Cats career.
