Sunderland captain Dan Neil expressed his disappointment at some aspects of the defeat vs Plymouth Argyle.

Sunderland have suffered their first league defeat of the 2024/25 Championship season in an away trip to Plymouth Argyle.

There were plenty of positives for French boss Regis Le Bris to take away from his side’s efforts on the road, especially from Romaine Mundle, who continues to shine and fill the boots of the vacated Jack Clarke.

The Black Cats looked assured and dangerous going forward, however problems arose at the back for Le Bris’ side against Plymouth Argyle, resulting in three goals conceded at Home Park.

Sunderland captain Dan Neil has offered his thoughts on the unexpected defeat suffered by his side, and what his Black Cats teammates ‘didn’t do’.

Sunderland captain Dan Neil expresses frustration after Plymouth Argyle defeat

Neil expressed his concerns over his side being unable to weather the storm of the away tie, and the fact they were unable to change up their strategy to quash the threat of Plymouth Argyle.

Per Sunderland Echo, Neil said: “I thought it was a game of two halves.

“First half we mostly controlled in and out of possession, I didn’t feel they threatened much.

“The second half was always going to be a different game, they came out with a bit more energy and we didn’t adapt quick enough. We’ve conceded three poor goals.

“I think we’ve played teams this season that have come and pressed us and we’ve dealt with it well and shown different ways to play.

“We haven’t always played short and played ourselves into trouble, Eliezer [Mayenda] has been stretching the pitch, Romaine [Mundle] has been stretching the pitch and allowing lads to get into those pockets. I just don’t think that we reacted quick enough and recognised the change of momentum in the second half. When you come to places like this that’s always going to happen.

“It’s a little bit easier at home because you have the crowd behind you and I think we had to understand and adapt a bit earlier to the momentum they were building.

“You don’t have to throw your identity out of the window but maybe sometimes for five or ten minutes you just have to weather the storm, and we just didn’t do that today.

“We found out at the back end of last year that there’s no easy games in this league, it doesn’t matter where you’re playing, what position you are in the league or how confident you are. They’ll have looked at today wanting to end our run and that’s what we’ve got to be ready for, more ready than we were in that second half today.”

Regis Le Bris must formulate a plan B for Sunderland

There are no doubts that Sunderland have had a brilliant start to the 2024/25 Championship season, and have had to see off the likes of Burnley along the way.

However, the game against Plymouth Argyle was the first time that le Bris’ side have gone behind in the Championship so far, and it felt like it was quite an uphill task for Sunderland away from home, even though the Black Cats have a clear upper-hand in quality amongst their ranks.

Sunderland will want to make sure that there are no repeats of the weekend, which saw them unsettled by the away crowd and as a result have their confidence and mindset knocked, as was the case throughout last season.

There are no doubts that Le Bris has done a decent job so far, but any small dose of uncertainty that creeps into the squad could be catastrophic, and he must ensure to put the players’ mindsets right after the defeat and move on to the home clash against Middlesbrough.
