One Sunderland gem was a ‘brilliant’ bright spark for Regis Le Bris in Plymouth Argyle defeat

The Sunderland star once again performed well, despite falling to a defeat against Plymouth Argyle.

Sunderland will need to bounce back after they suffered their first league defeat of the 2024/25 Championship campaign after they were undone by Plymouth Argyle on the road.

The 3-2 defeat for the Black Cats was most certainly unexpected against a side in the lower echelons of the Championship table, especially after Sunderland’s start under Regis Le Bris, who had previously guided his side to four straight Championship wins.

There were clear issues defensively in the defeat to Plymouth Argyle, however on the attacking front Le Bris side once again performed after goals courtesy of Patrick Roberts and Romaine Mundle.

Unlike last season, there is a real sense of optimism around Sunderland’s attacking front this season, and despite the defeat to Plymouth Argyle, one attacker performed brilliantly.

Sunderland star Romaine Mundle shines for Regis Le Bris’ side vs Plymouth Argyle

Sunderland winger Mundle has had big shoes to fill following the departure of Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town.

He has now been rightfully described as ‘brilliant’, per Sunderland Echo, after his solid performance out wide for the Black Cats, something which is becoming a constant this season.

The stats also back up the brilliant performance by the 21-year-old winger, as, per SofaScore, he managed to win 13 of his duels. Whilst also completing six dribbles.

He also had 67 touches on the ball, and made two key passes during his appearances, on top of bagging a brilliant goal which at the time looked to have given Sunderland a point on the road.

Romaine Mundle’s form will help ensure that Plymouth Argyle result is a blip

It is clear that Mundle has been one of the many standouts for Sunderland so far this season, alongside the likes of Chris Rigg, Dan Neil and Jobe Bellingham.

Despite the fact that Sunderland came away from the south coast with zero points, Mundle still shone for the Black Cats, and that is the exact thing that was missing from the side last season.

Mentality was a clear issue during the latter stages of the disastrous 2023/24 season, and it was often a case that heads would drop after Sunderland went behind.

However, Mundle showed, at the age-of-21, to be very mature on the pitch and simply did not let his head drop despite the defeat, and kept pushing until the very end.

Credit must be handed to Le Bris for instilling the mentality back into the Sunderland ranks as this will make it much easier for them to bounce back in their next league game against Middlesbrough.
