Sunderland midfielder Dan Neil has highlighted two of his ‘absolutely brilliant’ teammates at the Stadium of Light in a recent interview.

Sunderland has managed to build upon the back of a really encouraging campaign last season with a current standing of sixth after 16 games. Better yet, just five points separate the Black Cats from 3rd place Leeds United.

Much of what Sunderland has done well has come via Jack Clarke on the left side of the attack. Clarke has been in immense form, scoring nine goals and adding an assist for the Black Cats.

Clarke’s impressive displays have led multiple Premier League clubs to be chasing after his signature. While Patrick Roberts has been a dangerman also despite not performing to the same levels as Clarke.

Now though, midfielder Dan Neil has lauded both with praise.

Neil on Clarke and Roberts

Speaking with Sunderland Echo, Neil was quizzed on the two wide men as he explained, “They are our outlets,

“We want to get the ball to them as much as possible, you probably saw that last year when a lot of it went down Pat’s side because we had Amad as well.

“I think this year it’s been shared a lot better and I think Clarkey and Pat have been absolutely excellent this year. The more we can get them on the ball and find ways to get them one v one against full-backs, I back them to get past them every time.

“That’s why half the time I don’t support Pat and just get in the box to try and score a goal. They are absolutely brilliant and they are top lads as well.”

Sunderland looking to improve these positions

Despite being Sunderland’s deadliest threats, the wing positions seem to be areas of focus ahead of the January transfer window. This however is probably down in the main to Clarke’s potential departure.

Kwame Poku has been linked consistently with a move, while Alexander Aravena has also been tipped as a target despite facing stiff competition.

Amad Diallo has also been suggested as a potential incoming with the youngster still not back from injury and looking unlikely to feature much for his parent club.
