Once again, there’s widespread anger aimed at Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson, following another poor performance against Hull City.
Anthony Patterson has certainly been a worthy goalkeeper for Sunderland since he made his league debut for the Black Cats during the 2021/22 season.
But the 24-year-old Patterson has been facing growing criticism in the last few weeks owing to a number of individual errors that have lead to goals conceded.
That was the case in the first half against Hull City as Patterson failed to collect an incoming corner, though Patrick Roberts’ failed attempt at heading the ball clear didn’t help Patterson.
In the second half, Patterson had very little to do as his teammates looked for a way back into the game which they couldn’t do, as Sunderland were beaten 1-0 by Hull City.

Sunderland fans want Anthony Patterson dropped after Hull City error
Needless to say, there were plenty of Sunderland fans venting about Patterson on social media during the game against Hull.
Fans described him as “garbage” with many saying that “Patterson has to be dropped” in favour of back up goalkeeper Simon Moore.
“Caused us some huge problems this year,” said another Sunderland fan speaking about Patterson. Another added: “Once is a mistake but multiple times is a lack of ability.”
A similar comment read: “Looks short of confidence and these mistakes are costing Sunderland too many points.”
Meanwhile, this fan posted: “The lad’s a liability has absolutely no authority in his box and can’t keep a ball in play when he takes a goal kick either.”
A more detailed review of the Sunderland no.1 read: “I’ve backed Anthony Patterson to the hilt but he’s lost any sort of confidence. Costing us that goal in the first half is as bad as it gets. Cost us at Leeds, anytime a ball comes into the box he never looks comfortable at all. It’s just so easy and the basics.”

Anthony Patterson’s stats for Sunderland vs Hull City
During the game against Hull, Patterson faced eight shots with four of those on target, though the Englishman would need to make only three saves, compared to Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur who made two saves.
Patterson didn’t record any punches or high claims and ended the game with 38 touches of the ball, including 19 completed passes with a pass success rate of 79% in the end.
In terms of long balls, Patterson completed just two out of seven attempted as his long-range passing is once again called into question.
Up next for the Black Cats is a game against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Friday.
