Despite having a great start to the season for Sunderland, the January transfer window poses an opportunity to improve the squad further.
With Tony Mowbray’s side currently sitting in fifth place in the Championship, it is safe to say it has been a positive start.
In spite of the positive start, there will need to be some incoming in the January transfer window to maintain the good form.
It might be said that signing a striker could be necessary for the Black Cats but it is safe to say another young option isn’t the answer.
Let’s take a look at three options that could be bought in on a short-term loan to provide a boost.
Tim Iroegbunam

Corry Evans has struggled with injuries this campaign and Dan Neil has excelled. That being said, some defensive midfield cover could be useful.
Despite not being an out-and-out defensive mid, he prefers to play at the base of midfield. The England youth international is skilful and would provide Mowbray with a different style of player.
He is returning from injury himself so may pose a slight risk. Given his form last year, on loan at Queens Park Rangers, he could be a useful bit of business.
Louie Barry

Right, so this one does revolve around him being recalled. Barry is currently out on loan with Stockport County and is smashing it. Last month he won the League Two Player of the Month, as he broke scoring records.
In 13 starts, the Villa loanee has seven goals and two assists. There have been rumours suggesting that his parent club may recall him and find a higher-level move.
If that comes to pass then it would be a smart move for the Black Cats to give him a go. Although he has never played in the Championship, he could prove himself. Without the pressure of playing every week, he could flourish in the North East.
Omari Kellyman

Another Villa option but it is testament to the number of great young players they have who can play at a high level already.
Kellyman has made appearances in the Europa Conference League and EFL Cup so far this season. This have come after impressing in preseason.
An attack-minded midfielder who likes to get on the ball and run at the opposition. Given he is just 18-years old, he is an option who could take some time to bed in. Once he has done that he could be a big threat.
With a youthful look to Sunderland’s midfield, as is, Kellyman could slot right in if signed on loan.
