There looks set to be some movement at Sunderland before the January transfer window slams shut at 11pm tomorrow night.

The January transfer window closes for business at 11pm on Thursday night.

Sunderland like many others in the Championship have had a tough month so far, with Leo Hjelde arriving on a permanent deal from Leeds United yesterday to kickstart the club’s transfer activity for the month.

And under-fire boss Michael Beale will surely be desperate for a few more names to come through the doors at the Stadium of Light, but there looks set to be some moving on as well.

Here we look at three players who could potentially leave Sunderland before the January transfer window closes…

Alex Pritchard

The first and perhaps most obvious candidate to leave before the deadline is Alex Pritchard.

The 30-year-old lost his fan favourite credentials after it was announced before the last game vs Stoke City that he was making himself unavailable for selection, and that he wanted to leave the club as soon as possible.

A move to Birmingham City has been touted where Pritchard would be reuniting with former boss Tony Mowbray; it’s said that this move could cost Blues as little as £100,000.

If there’s a high profile departure at Sunderland in what is left of this month’s transfer window, it would be that of Jack Clarke.

Sunderland’s star man has once again been the centre of transfer peculation after netting 13 goals in the first half of the 2023/24 Championship season, with Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Lazio all eyeing a deal.

The latter are said to have submitted a £15million bid but Michael Graham says that Sunderland would need more than £20million to consider selling; and even then it’d be unlikely.

But Clarke remains one who could potentially be on the move, especially if a team comes in with a big, late bid.

Jay Matete

Sunderland’s forgotten man Jay Matete is another who could be on the move before 11pm tomorrow, after it was reported last week that two clubs are trying to sign the midfielder.

The 22-year-old is yet to feature under Beale and yet to feature in the Championship this season after helping to guide Plymouth Argyle to promotion from League One last time round.

If another midfielder comes in, that could clear the way for Matete to potentially leave the club on loan.
