Kristjaan Speakman has admitted that Sunderland were ‘happy’ to keep hold of one player who left the club today.

Sunderland had a very quiet transfer window until recent days, with Leo Hjelde’s arrival kicking off their transfer business.

The Black Cats have since welcomed Romaine Mundle to the club on deadline day, while they also look set to sign Barnsley’s Callum Styles on loan with an obligation to buy in the summer.

Meanwhile, they have also parted ways with four players this month.

Jack Diamond and Jewison Bennette left the club on loan to Carlisle United and Aris Saloniki respectively, while Alex Pritchard completed a controversial switch to Birmingham City.

The most recent exit saw Nectarios Triantis join Scottish outfit Hibernian FC, having made only three appearance since arriving on Wearside in the summer.

Despite his lack of appearances, Kristjaan Speakman has said that Sunderland were ‘happy’ to keep him at the club until the end of the season.

Speaking to the club, the sporting director said: “Nectar’s move to Sunderland last summer was a big step for him – professionally and personally – and we are really pleased with his progress.

“We were happy for him to remain at the Club for the rest of the season, but felt this was a unique opportunity in a strong league at a Club where he has existing relationships, which will only help him.

“He has a strong ambition to play regularly during the remainder of the campaign, which we fully support, and we hope this period concludes a really positive start to his time at Sunderland AFC.”

Was it the right decision to send Triantis out?

Leo Hjelde’s arrival at the club pretty much cemented Nectarios Triantis’ place in the U21 squad, with even his place on the senior team’s bench likely to be under threat.

It is definitely the correct decision to allow Triantis to leave the club as he has never looked particularly close to cracking the starting line-up. Hjelde and even Aji Alese are likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order for the centre of defence.
