Sunderland suffer January transfer setback as Michael Beale eyes his first signing

Sunderland have been linked with this 22-year-old striker who could yet become Michael Beale’s first signing as boss.

Sunderland have recently appointed Beale as their new head coach in what is a fairly surprising appointment among supporters.

Other names seemed to be further ahead in the race for the job, and other names were perhaps preferred to the former QPR and Rangers boss.

But the 43-year-old has the job and he looks set to be backed in January with a new striker once again looking like a priority at the Stadium of Light.

And one striker who Sunderland apparently fancy is Musa Drammeh.

Sunderland see bid rejected for Sevilla’s Musa Drammeh

The 22-year-old Gambian striker has been with Sevilla since 2022, signing from the lower leagues in Spain.

He’s only got one first-team appearance to his name so far, coming in the Copa del Rey during the 2021/22 campaign, but Sunderland have been keeping a close eye on him.

Reports coming out of Spain say that the Black Cats have had scouts watching Drammeh in action and that they’ve already made an offer and subsequently seen it rejected.

The same report adds that Drammeh, who is under contract until 2025, is viewed as an important, future first-team player at Sevilla.

Sunderland’s interest in Drammeh was first reported earlier this month when it was revealed that the Black Cats and Birmingham City had both been making checks.

Could Drammeh be the answer to Sunderland’s striker woes?

Sunderland have had striker issues throughout 2023.

Even dating back to the end of last year when Tony Mowbray was without Ross Stewart, Sunderland’s thin attacking department was laid bare, but they still haven’t properly addressed it.

They’ve been signing players like Luis Hemir, Eliezer Mayenda, and Nazariy Rusyn from teams in Europe, who are players with no prior experience of English football and in some cases barely any experience of first-team football.

Drammeh seems to fall into this category and whilst he might be a player with huge potential, he’s probably not someone who can come in and combat the current issues in this Sunderland team.

Beale needs a steady striker who can come into the XI and make an instant impact.

He needs someone with a bit of relevant experience and some kind of track record, though whether the Sunderland owners would consider signing such a player remains to be seen.

Beale’s first game in charge is vs Coventry City this weekend.
