Sunderland have been urged to sign a League One striker this month.
Despite landing four in the summer, Sunderland are still on the hunt for a new striker in the January window.
The Black Cats are said to be keen on signing Bournemouth’s Kieffer Moore and are already in talks over a potential move. However, the Wales international is likely to attract a lot of interest and it will be tough to win the race for his signature.
Michael Beale’s side have also been linked with Sam Gallagher, who has been the subject of bids from Ipswich Town. However, the 28-year-old’s goal record is hardly going to set the world alight.
There are very limited attacking options in the January window, especially given the amount of other clubs that are also searching for a proven goalscorer.
Carlos Edwards has now urged Sunderland to look further down than the Championship, claiming that Jonson Clarke-Harris could be a good signing for his former club.
Speaking to Football League World, the ex-Black Cat said: “There are so many strikers out there that I’m sure they could go in for. Me personally, I would go in for Peterborough United striker Jonson Clarke-Harris. For the last two or three seasons, he’s proven that he can score goals. I don’t see why, it’s easy to make excuses, but everyone has their value. I know Peterborough would put a certain value on him.
“Just take a chance. You need a striker, you need one of those. So why not?”

Could Sunderland sign Clarke-Harris?
Jonson Clarke-Harris has certainly made his name in the EFL, having netted animpressive 104 goals in 262 appearances in League One during his career.
The ‘outstanding’ forward has proven himself to be one of Peterborough United’s best ever, having scored 84 goals in 170 appearances since joining them from Bristol Rovers in 2020.
Clarke-Harris isn’t quite as proven in the Championship though. The 29-year-old most recently scored 12 goals in 41 games in the second tier during the 2021-22 season, while he has 21 goals in total.
Clarke-Harris’ record in the Championship is hardly bad, but it is far from the guaranteed quality that Sunderland need either. The forward is used to fighting for promotion in League One, but we need someone ready to do the same in the league above.
While he would probably score more goals than our current crop, the amount of money Posh will demand for him probably doesn’t match how important he would be to us.
