One of Sunderland’s many impressive young stars is set to seal a loan move away from the club, in a deal lasting until the end of 2024.

Sunderland have no end of talented youngsters in their ranks, and many of which look like future first-team stars.

The path has been set by the likes of Chris Rigg and Tommy Watson this season, who’ve proved once again that there’s a clear route from the youth team to the first-team at Sunderland.

Next season could see a new load of academy gems make their mark at the Stadium of Light. But Kristjaan Speakman and co are still making good use of loan exits.

The likes of Anthony Patterson spent time out on loan before becoming a key first-team name at Sunderland. Elsewhere in the goalkeeping department, Matty Young is on loan at Salford City, albeit struggling for game time.

Another name in Ben Crompton is now poised to make a temporary exit from Sunderland.

Ben Crompton poised to join Tamworth on loan, days after Sunderland thrashing

Sunderland’s U21s thumped Tamworth 5-1 in the National League Cup on Tuesday night, with defender Crompton among those on the score-sheet.

Now though, the 20-year-old defender is poised to join National League strugglers Tamworth on loan.

An emerging report from Alan Nixon on Patreon says that the versatile defender is ‘heading’ there on loan for the remainder of 2024.

There’s no official announcement from either Tamworth or Sunderland as of yet.

Crompton is yet to make his Championship debut for Sunderland but has played for the first-team once in the League Cup.

Ben Crompton could be the heir to one Sunderland star

Nixon’s report states that Crompton looks set to play at right-back for Tamworth, who currently sit in 15th place of the National League table.

And that’s a position that the Sunderland first-team is extremely light on right now with Trai Hume the only out and out right-back.

For Saturday’s game against Millwall, Hume is suspended for Sunderland and so Le Bris has a difficult decision to make, with someone set to play out of position at right-back.

Le Bris could yet view Crompton as good future option for the right-back position, or even as Hume’s heir.

If Crompton can get some good experience at Tamworth and then possibly feature for Sunderland in the back-end of this Championship season, he could be primed to be the no.2 choice right-back next time round.
