Sunderland could snap up Silko Thomas this summer.

The winger is currently on trial with the Black Cats’ Under-21 side and featured against Huddersfield Town on Monday, according to the Sunderland Echo’s James Copley.

Thomas previously played for England as a schoolboy and starred for Chelsea’s Under-18s at only 16 years old, before he was promoted to the Under-21s during the 2021-22 season.

However, the teenager’s playing time declined during the previous campaign and he now finds himself as a free agent after he was released by the Blues.

Thomas spent a period on trial with Sheffield United earlier this year but wasn’t offered a deal by the Premier League outfit.

He has since attracted interest from Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers, however he is now enjoying a second trial period with the Black Cats.

The 19-year-old bagged two goals and an assist in Monday’s clash with Huddersfield, suggesting promise for Thomas as he searches for a new club.

Silko Thomas could replace Isaac Lihadji at Sunderland

Despite huge success for Patrick Roberts and Jack Clarke last season, Sunderland’s need for some attacking threat during their defeat to Ipswich Town was very obvious.

Isaac Lihadji switched Wearside for Qatar last week and has left a void on the Black Cats’ bench that could potentially be filled by Thomas.

The youngster clearly has talent to have spent so long on Chelsea’s books and if he manages to impress during his trial with the Under-21s then he could definitely provide some competition in the first team.
